Race philosophy
In the near future
It is anticipated that young people will participate in the race’s nautical activities in their town and their sailing clubs, as an integral part of their physical education and cultural programme both at school and at university. The yacht is launched in its sponsor’s colours. Partners, guests and clients will be welcomed onboard as part of a team. Finally, international marketing develops with promotion and sales of production yachts, equipment and communication..
Long-term
development
The success of the event followed by a prize-giving ceremony will be captured by television, press, books and documentation to prolong its history. An environmental and cultural film (live TV) will be produced in conjunction with sponsors to show the Cape’s wild and natural history and the Horn’s legendary maritime epoch. In the wake of Argentina’s and Chile’s 200th anniversary Cape Horn Race will enhance international relations between Latin America and Europe.
Ecology
The race promotes maritime culture, natural heritage, and social and economic implications associated with offshore islands. It encourages school participation in an ecological and environmental cultural programme. It sensitizes the public to National park issues, wildlife protection and awareness, as well as helping to save the albatross.
Youth
I.R.C. inshore regattas attract large fleets of yachts of all classes. Cape Horn Race’s popular philosophy consists of creating a high-level international ocean-sailing event, yet which is easily accessible to all. In a similar manner to the first Whitbread round the world races, handicap team-racing attracts custom and production built boats in addition to expedition and charter yachts.
Passing the Horn consists on the one hand of circum-navigating Cape Horn island, and on the other hand of passing the Cape’s southern meridian. The latter is recognized as the supreme challenge of ocean sailing. Cape Horn Race is less expensive and more popular, and clearly appeals to a younger market. Moreover, there is a correlation between the number of yachts and the financial, collective and visual success of sporting competition.
Young sailors, yacht-owners, skippers, crew-members, sailing schools, universities, professional skippers and their supporting team are all attracted by: a low-cost - notwithstanding necessary security equipment - becoming one of an elite body of cape-horners; and finally gaining the opportunity of bringing the event’s second edition to their home town in 2017-2018.
